| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) research report issued on 11 May 1945 on a system of policing and self-government of Chinese origin known as Hoko. The report is a supplement to RR-126 part 1 and contains information on how Japanese leaders used the Hoko system to mobilise for total war, the genesis of the Political Association of Greater Japan which replaced the Imperial Rule Assistance Association in March 1945, Neighbourhood Associations as instruments of social control, other associations and groups operating in Japan (the Guard Defence League, the Reservist Organisation), the "Black Dragon Society", subversive activity and the Japanese secret service, the training of spies and the treatment of prisoners of war. It also contains additional information on attempts to enforce the Hoko system in occupied territories, and Japanese political and military figureheads. The appendix consists of a list of office-holders in the Political Association of Greater Japan as at 21 April 1945. |
