Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Wakde Island on 28 May 1944 during the Allied attacks on Japanese positions in northern Dutch New Guinea, which were intended to isolate the 18th Army at Wewak. This item is an extract from a training manual entitled "Reference on anti-aircraft fire with field artillery", issued in April 1943 by SHIMIZU Kiku, Headquarters Commandant, Department of Inspector General of Military Training. It contains information on preparing positions and guns for anti-aircraft fire, an appendix of charts and sketches, the effective zone of shrapnel projectiles for field guns, and various trajectory diagrams. Using field artillery for anti-aircraft defence became increasingly necessary for the Japanese who were hampered by supply shortages and the dominance of Allied air power. |
