| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for JA147678 of the Shipping Signals Regiment (Akatsuki 2955) Force, 3rd Company, who was captured by natives while asleep and handed over to US troops near Tanahmerah (near Hollandia) on 6 May 1944. During the interrogation, JA147678 provided information on tanks on Palau Island, signals training, service life and the harsh discipline, his hope to settle in Australia after the war, that he never saw Allied leaflet propaganda and had not heard radio broadcasts, and the Mitsubishi Chemical Manufacturing Company and the production of synthetic wool. He also explained that while the Japanese people had been lulled into complacency by a constant theme of success and conquest, setbacks such as the withdrawal from Guadalcanal and the death of 3,000 Japanese at Attu were mentioned on Japanese radio back home. |
