Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for JA147797 of the Akatsuki 6164 Medical Unit, who was captured at Depapre, near Hollandia, on 10 May 1944. JA147797, a 34 year old Superior Private from Hiroshima Prefecture, was became separated from his party during a retreat from Allied forces landing towards Demta (50 kms west of Hollandia). On arrival at a native village he was captured by US troops. During the interrogation, JA147797 provided information on morale and rationing in Japan, the organisation of the Akatsuki Medical Unit, the location and functions of the Hiroshima Army Hospital, the scarcity of medical supplies including the reuse of bandages aboard hospital ships, an Allied air raid on Buenos Aires Maru in January 1943, shipping losses between January and March 1943, the effects of Allied air raids between 2 June 1943 and 22 April 1944, and the number of prisoners of war in Singapore in January 1943.
