Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for 2nd Lieutenant WATANABE Fukuichi of the 41st Infantry Regiment 2nd Battalion 2nd Machine Gun Company 4th Platoon, who was captured in Gona on 27 November 1942. WATANABE, a 26 year old 2nd Lieutenant from Ehime, was suffering from malaria and sore feet, and was shot through the chest when he tried to escape from Australian soldiers in Gona. His unit had advanced as far as Wamai when it received the order to retreat. During the interrogation, WATANABE provided information on the unit's movements, strength, and weapons. WATANABE was a school teacher before he was conscripted and promoted to officer rank after a year. He also discussed low morale among the soldiers in the unit, and socio-political situation in Japan. Detailed information on fuel dumps on Iwagi Island in the Inland Sea was attached, with a map. |
