Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Namber (Noemfoor Island) on 1 July 1944 during the Allied attacks on Japanese positions in northern Dutch New Guinea, which were intended to isolate the 18th Army at Wewak. This item is an extract from an pamphlet entitled "Red candles discharge", issued in February 1941 by 12th Army Staff Training Unit and is a supplement to EP-244 and supersedes that document from page 8 onwards. It contains information on the construction, characteristics, effect and methods of ignition, tactical value of a "gas meteorology". It also contains notes and sketches on the Type 88 Smoke Candle (Type 94). This document would most likely have been brought to Dutch New Guinea by units having serving in China or the Philippines where chemical weapons were used.
