YOSHIMOTO, an 18 year old private from Nara, surrendered to the Australians near Sambo sometime in August 1942 while suffering from malaria. YOSHIMOTO was accused of malingering and was beaten by an officer. He went into the jungle and walked towards the enemy lines where he surrendered. He provided information on his unit organisation, training, road construction on the Kokoda trail and equipment. He stated that he did not want to go back to Japan, but wanted to work for England and become a citizen of Australia.
