| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) research report on the deification of Japanese war dead, posthumous promotions and spiritual training. The enquiry was received on 9 August 1943 and an answer despatched on 4 September 1943. Based on information taken from current translations, bulletins, interrogation reports and personal letters, this report contains a range of material on the attitude of Japanese soldiers and civilians towards death, spirituality, nationalism, the Emperor, fighting, treatment of fallen comrades and the "warrior tradition". It also contains instructions on the investigation of soldiers to be enshrined at the Yasukuni Shrine, recommendations for posthumous promotion and commemorations. Appendix A includes a certificate from the Imperial Household Ministry promoting HASHIMOTO Shirô from Junior Jû 7th Grade to Senior JOSEI 7th Grade Court Rank, dated 25 April 1943. ATIS researchers hoped to garner as much information as possible about the psychological make-up of the Japanese soldier and Japanese society. The report concluded that Japanese society was a "closely united society" in which the State was regarded as a "vast patriarchal family" where the Emperor was the "Sovereign that is a manifest God". Importantly, for Allied forces in the front-line, "the bitter resistance by the enemy shows the vitality of such beliefs." |
