Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for JA147123 of the 4th Air Intelligence Unit, who was captured at Talasea on 13 March 1944. JA147123, a 24 year old 1st Class Private (airplane spotter) from Kyoto, bunked in a native hut after arriving at the foot of the peninsula at Talasea which was then shelled by landing US Marines. JA147123 was wounded and captured without resistance. During the interrogation, he explained that discipline in the Japanese Army was very strict and that non-commissioned officers were often struck, that he was certain that Japan would win the war because of the superiority of the samurai code, that Japanese equipment and weaponry was inferior to that of the Allies, that he though both the Japanese and US newspapers censored war news. |
