Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Whittaker's Plantation on 13 September 1943 during the Japanese retreat from campaigns in the Owen Stanley Ranges. This item contains extracts from the field diaries of No. 2 Company, 51st Engineer Regiment, dated February to June 1943. The diaries contain operational orders, details of road construction in Powell Harbour, the movement of transports and destroyers between Rabaul, Lae, Kavieng and Powell Harbour, and the movement of the unit from Rabaul to Finschhafen in March 1943. The item also contains accounts of the disabling of Kuroshio Maru on 21 February 1943, the Allied bombing and strafing of Japanese landing-craft in Pondo, New Britain, the attack on a Japanese convoy in Dampier Strait on 3 March 1943, the landing at Finschhafen, and the discovery at Bonga of an Allied aeroplane which had crashed one month earlier.
