Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) research report issued on 15 June 1945 on signal flags used by Japanese naval and merchant ships. It contains information on flag signals which appeared to be unusual or an irregular combination of flags and other emblems, including sleeves, the national flag, ensigns and the national flag, code signal flags for Japanese syllabary, semaphore signals, speed cones, signals identifying vessels in Wakasa Bay (eastern coast of Japan, Fukui Prefecture), extracts from the signalling textbook, and meteorological and other flags. The appendix includes coloured diagrams of the code flags representing the Japanese syllabary, various signal flags used in the Inland Sea, meteorological flags, wind-chart flags, daylight storm warnings and night storm warnings.
