| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Doremena (presumably near Hollandia) on 13 May 1944 during the Allied attacks on Japanese positions in northern Dutch New Guinea, which were intended to isolate the 18th Army at Wewak. This item is a book entitled "Characteristics of submarines and anti-submarine operations", compiled partly from lecturers given by Commander MURAOKA, Submarine School instructor, during combined training at Ujina in August 1942. It contains text and sketches on the characteristics and tactics of submarine and anti-submarine tactics including: underwater and surface navigation, submarine numbers and strengths (Japanese, German and Allied), combat efficiency, torpedoes and firing methods, vulnerability to air attack, and offensive tactics. Actual combat examples cited include the sinking of the USS Lexington on 13 January 1943, the sinking of the USS Yorktown during the Battle of Midway, a sea battle off the Malayan coast on 12 December 1942, and the reconnaissance of Pearl Harbor by submarines prior to the attack on 7 December 1942. This document also contains general comments on Allied naval strategy. |
