They constitute the primary collection of original materials for the study of Japanese involvement in the Second World War. They include war diaries, battle and operations reports, military orders, and other field reports and documents. They also include reports, memoirs and statements produced in the post-war period. There are approximately 1,800 documents in the collection that relate to operations in areas where Australian units were involved. These have been categorised as follows: South East Area Army operations (approx. 663 records); North of Australia Army operations (approx. 421 records); Army Air operations in New Guinea, Solomons, and Bismarck Archipelago (approx. 330 records); Malaya and Java operations in the South West Area (approx. 480 records); Central strategic instructions for Army operations (unknown quantity).
