Content: | There were 92,633 personnel including civilian employees (Army 61,699; Navy 30,964) in Rabaul as of 31 December 1945. Later 800 were sent to Finschhafen and 100 to the New Ireland Island in order to help the Allies. About 10,000 were repatriated from 28 February 1946 and 438 were repatriated from Lae on 16 February 1946. Although the repatriation order may have been issued early, the Japanese requested that the order to move the 3rd Group in preparation for repatriation be issued at a much later time. An attached report discusses the amount of anti-malaria drugs in the possession of the Japanese forces. The Japanese forces were suffering from lack of medication and requested more supplies from the Australian Forces. |
