Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Hollandia on 18 May 1944 during the Allied attacks on Japanese positions in northern Dutch New Guinea, which were intended to isolate the 18th Army at Wewak. This item is a manual on anti-gas measures entitled "Gas protection manual", issued on 17 April 1943 by the Minister of War, TOJO Hideki. It contains information on the characteristics of various gases, gas protection equipment, protection of animals and materiel, collective protection for pillboxes, first aid for gas casualties, defence against gas attack, chemical warfare training, and various charts on simulating a chemical attack, the effectiveness of decontamination agents and a weather logbook. This item was most likely brought to New Guinea by units previously serving in China where chemical weapons were used. |
