Content: | The items in this sub-series came into the Australian Army's possession after Japanese servicemen who numbered up to 100,000 were repatriated from Rabaul to Japan. The collection is a rare and valuable one, throwing light on the situation of the Japanese forces found themselves in post-surrender Rabaul. Types of materials vary from administrative documents to personal diaries and correspondence. They cumulatively provide a vivid picture of the Japanese forces under the control of the Australians. During and after the war, Japanese in camps in the Rabaul area engaged in programs designed to sultivate their ability to be self-sufficient. Many documents in this sub-series describe camp life and activities. The majority of the documents are in Japanese, but several items of correspondence have English translations being attached. The collection includes a small number of documents from the pre-surrender and transitional periods as well. |
