Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Cape Gloucester on 15 January 1944 during the Allied campaign to retake New Britain. This item is an instruction booklet entitled "Notes on small boat operations", issued on 25 March 1943 by Col KOIKE, Commander 8th Shipping Engineer Regiment. It contains information on the organisation of small landing craft operations, security, concealment, armament of boats, formations, emergency repairs, dealing with natives, navigation and tactics. This item also contains charts and diagrams on unit organisation, preparations, bartering rates and camouflage techniques.

This instruction manual was based on operations in New Guinea and New Britain at a time when Japanese landing craft were vulnerable to superior Allied air and sea power.
