| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured on the Marshall Islands on 15 July 1944 following the American invasion. This item is a report entitled "Monthly intendance report for March 1944", issued by 17th Army Intendance Department on 10 April 1944. It contains a summary of American movements on Bougainville and operations at Torokina, the activities of the Intendance Department, losses in action and personnel changes, condition of supplies and bivouacs, and comments on budgeting and accounts. The document also contains information on supply facilities and the capacity of transport facilities. This item comments on the fact that supplies by transport had been cut off from mid-October 1943 and urgent material had to be supplied by submarines. But the damage inflicted on the Rabaul Naval Base by Allied bombing in late February 1944, the laying of magnetic mines and continuing air raids, meant that the movement and unloading of submarines was severely curtailed. |
