| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for 1st Class Private JA147058 of the 141st Regiment, 9th Company, who was captured while sick with malaria by US troops near Kara-ai, New Britain on 23 February 1944. During the interrogation, JA147058 provided an eyewitness account of a naval battle between USS Houston and accompanying destroyers against Japanese forces in 1942. JA147058 was part of a task force making an early morning landing. Following the battle of the Java Sea in February 1942, the heavy cruisers USS Houston and HMAS Perth attacked Japanese forces landing at the north-western tip of Java. After an hour in the narrow confines of Bantam Bay under fire from Japanese ships and destroyers, both Allied cruisers were sunk. Houston slipped beneath the waves at about 0036 hours on 1 March. The Netherlands East Indies surrendered to the Japanese eight days later. |
