Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for JA147358 of the 49th Anchorage Unit, who was captured on 23 April 1944. JA147358, a Corporal, was picked up at sea near Aitape by US troops while trying to escape from Ali Island by canoe. An Allied destroyer sank the canoes with machine-gun fire. During the interrogation, JA147358 provided information on officers of the 49th Anchorage Unit, recruitment, his service experience and the callous treatment meted out by superior officers, rationing in Japan, morale, his attitude towards capture and the war, his attitude towards other races, his dislike of military police and the labour situation in Japan. The appendix contains organisational charts for the 49th Anchorage Unit, the 122nd Infantry Regiment, the 46th Anchorage Unit and Shipping Headquarters.
