Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for a civilian labourer FUSEI Iwatarô of the 15th Construction Battalion, who was captured near Buna on 3 January 1943. FUSEI, a 40 year old labourer from Gunma, deserted his unit as he was disgusted with the treatment he received, and surrendered to Australian and American troops. He was recruited by the Navy as a construction labourer and sent to the South Seas for the first time in August 1941 and, for the second time, to Buna in August 1942. During the interrogation, FUSEI provided extensive information on the organisation of the construction battalion, movements of the unit, equipment, training, morale, and facilities in the Japanese bases in the Pacific. FUSEI demonstrated that he had extensive information on military activities even though he was a civilian labourer. |
